Old Stock

A quirky Canadian comedy...

It is a paradox of the Great White North. Canada produces a lot of comics who make it big in Hollywood movies. But our home-grown comedies are rare. And they usually go for droll chuckles instead of generating the big laughs. So it is with the dramatic comedy Old Stock. Do not dismiss director James Genn’s movie just because it has an awkward title. Old Stock is actually quite charming and affecting. And funny, in that sad, droll manner I spoke about. The title refers to the movie’s protagonist, a college-age youth in a small town. But Stock Burton never went to college. Instead, after a tragic accident at his high school prom two years before, he went into hiding ... in plain sight. Stock lives as a hermit in his grandfather’s retirement home, occasionally doing odd jobs to earn his keep. The plot answers a simple question: How does Stock get back on track with his life? His emotions, however, are complicated. He feels responsible for the young woman who was left paralyzed after that prom accident. Old Stock explores that deep well of regret while Stock becomes involved with a new girlfriend named Patti. She has her own mental issues — and a criminal record. There is a glimmer of Silver Linings Playbook here. But Genn’s movie, as written by Dane Clark, has little in common with the Hollywood flick. It finds its own niche. The leads of the Canadian movie are both excellent and well-matched as a movie couple — Noah Reid as Stock and Melanie Leishman as Patti. The resolution of the complications they face in the past and present gets a little too staged for my liking. This weakens the movie’s impact. But it is still a quiet, modest winner with real heart.
