Sleeping Dogs Lie

A Whole New Breed Of Romantic Comedy

The PETA principle goes mad: It's refreshing to see a movie that admits honesty is NOT the best policy, at least as concerns inter-species dating. Written and directed by erstwhile comedian Bob "Bobcat" Goldthwait, the story concerns a young woman who commits a spontaneous act of kindness on her dog's, shall we say, chewy toy, and lives to regret ever talking about it. As Amy, the animal philanthropist with a secret, Melinda Page Hamilton (the sexy nun on "Desperate Housewives") is perfectly cast; she gives a pedigree to perversity. The rest of the cast is good, too, especially Geoff Pierson as Amy's gruff and rattled dad. It's hard to say how many audiences this movie will fetch into the theaters, but Goldthwait -- his motives always suspect -- has made a very watchable movie out of a very strange subject. With Bryce Johnson, Colby French. 1:29 (sex, adult content, canine content). At the Sunshine Cinemas, East Houston Street at Second Avenue, Manhattan. -- John Anderson, Newsday
