National Theatre Live: The Audience

Review by Andrew L. Urban:

Haute Cuisine (Les Saveurs du palais)

For a sumptuous experience sure to whet any cinematic appetite, there’s no better place than the Elysée Palace to sample the culinary delights of France. Haute Cuisine, based on the real-life story of the personal chef to former French President François Mitterrand in the late 1980s, takes the viewer on a foodlover’s holiday through the most mouthwatering creations imaginable.

Good Ol' Freda

You’d think the well of Beatles nostalgia had run dry — hasn’t everyone remotely associated with the Fab Four long ago weighed in, cashed in and told their stories to anyone who would listen?

Robocop

Rush

"Rush" is a fable. Sure, director Ron Howard's thrill-ride is based on a legendary season in Formula 1 racing, but the movie (with its light and dark rivals and its doubling of themes) has the layers of a bedtime tale — albeit a rumbling and roaring, at times randy and romantic one.

Sarah préfère la course (Sarah Prefers To Run)

Introverted and singularly focused, Sarah lives to run. When she is accepted as a middle-distance runner into the athletic training program at McGill, one of the best in the province, she is determined to leave Quebec City and go, in spite of her mother’s surprising lack of support, both emotional and financial.

Louis Cyr: The Strongest Man in the World

Louis Cyr: L’homme le plus fort du monde rests on Antoine Bertrand’s broad shoulders, and fortunately, the popular actor has the muscles, charisma and chops to bring this legendary Quebec strongman back to life. Bertrand is very good, and that’s a good thing because he’s front and centre throughout this engaging biopic.

Watermark

Watermark is directed by multiple award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal and renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky, and is the third part of Burtynsky’s ‘Water’ project, which includes a book Burtynsky: Water and a major photographic exhibition.

The Spectacular Now

Sutter Keely, an easygoing high school senior in a blue-collar Southern city, lives for the moment. His gift is not the ability to plan or see projects through, but to make people feel better about themselves and laugh. A low-ambition charmer, he has no plan for what will happen after the last graduation party.

Austenland

Based on the novel by Shannon Hale, Austenland stars Keri Russell as Jane Hayes, a 30-something single woman with an unhealthy obsession with the Regency world of Jane Austen.
