Dan and Linda are two ex-revolutionaries who live underground and survive by cruising garage sales for buried treasures they sell on the internet. Bound together by misdeeds of the past, the once passionate pair have become ambivalent about their political beliefs and feelings for each other. To numb the pain of past mistakes, Dan and Linda smoke weed - a lot of it - all day.

Zhang Yimou's "Curse of the Golden Flower" is a kind of feast, an over-the-top, all-stops-pulled-out lollapalooza that means to play kitschy and grand at once. The great Chow Yun Fat plays the Emperor Ping, home from the wars at last, eager to lose himself in the bosom of his loving family. Except he doesn't love them, and they don't love him, and everyone is busy plotting against one another.

The PETA principle goes mad: It's refreshing to see a movie that admits honesty is NOT the best policy, at least as concerns inter-species dating. Written and directed by erstwhile comedian Bob "Bobcat" Goldthwait, the story concerns a young woman who commits a spontaneous act of kindness on her dog's, shall we say, chewy toy, and lives to regret ever talking about it.

"Dickensian" barely describes Andrei Kravchuk's heartbreaking drama of a determined young orphan in search of his birth mother, although comparisons to Oliver Twist are apt. Where Dickens found some humour and occasional rays of sunshine in the bleak streets of London, The Italian uncovers only desperation and doggedness in their Russian equivalent.

Volver – a dazzlingly assured blend of comedy and serious psychological drama – is in some respects a ghost story.

As a scriptwriter, Jeremy Brock (Mrs. Brown, Charlotte Gray) gravitates toward strong women and, in his directorial debut, sandwiches Harry Potter sidekick Rupert Grint between two mother figures (Julie Walters and Laura Linney, both thesping up a storm) whose respective excesses balance each other perfectly.
